Groups of not more than twenty-four part courses, formed by reciprocatory knitting, are inserted at any or all of regions such as 11-15, 19, 20, 23 and 25 of a circularly knitted stocking providing narrow coursewise strips without substantially altering the shape, to give additional fullness to the fabric when stretched, or for ornamental and/or marking purposes: particularly for this last purpose, the insertions may be formed from a separate yarn which may be coloured with a fugitive dye. Eyelets 20 or 26 may be formed at the ends of the insertions. The eyelets 20 may converge downwardly towards the back line to simulate fashioning marks. The part courses may be knitted on spaced groups of needles within the section of the needle circle used for the reciprocatory knitting and separated by a shorter group of inactive needles, so that there are formed, in coursewise correspondence, two spaced insertions and therefore two sets of eyelets 20. The eyelets 26 may be large enough to receive the buttons of suspender clasps. The eyelets may be accentuated by reduction in length of part courses intervening between the end ones in an insertion. The yarn in any or all insertions may be one possessing stretch properties, e.g. bulked nylon yarn; or it may be of cotton. Thermoplastic yarn may be incorporated in the region of the heel and toe or over the whole of the blank, which is shaped by boarding after closure of the toe.
