[Class 141] [Also in Group VIII] In an integrally knitted garment or fabric therefo: incorporating elastic o: rubber threads and capable of stretch in two directions the inherent elasticity o: stiffness of two integral elastic areas, that include the same courses and have the same elastic threads extending through them differs. The front pane A of a corset is knitted of À1 x 1 rib. but in the side panels B, certain cylinder or dial needles are omitted, so that at predetermined wales, two consecutive wales of a like kind occur, e.g. to produce a repeating sequence of five wales of 1 x 1 rib, followed by two plain wales : finally, in knitting the back panel C, further needles are omitted, e.g. so as to produce a 2 x 1 rib. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), the corset has a comparatively close rib front panel of, say, 1 x 1 rib. whilst the back and sides are made of slacker fabric, e.g. by omitting alternate dial needles to produce 2 x 1 rib. The fabric is made on a multifeeder machine having an inelastic thread fed in at all feeders, or at selected feeders, the remaining feeder or feeders supplying an elastic stitch forming thread alone or together with an inelastic thread. A laid-in elastic thread is also fed in adjacent one or more feeders. The fabric may be of tuck-rib (say cardigan or halfcardigan) or of the type described in Specification 428,220, [Group VIII]. Patterning may be effected, as by varying the rib structure, the frequency of courses embodying tuck stitches, the frequency of laying in of elastic threads, and /or the courses of stitches produced from elastic thread. Wrapped or covered elastic thread is preferably employed. The back panel C is longer and stretches more easily than the more closely knitted side panels B, which are, in turn, longer than the front panel A.
