A screw cap e.g. of polyethylene has a central depression 13 with a frusto-conical side wall 14 which is deformed when the cap is applied to a bottle neck to form a seal therewith Instead of threads the cap flange 20, Fig. 5, may be formed with an annular rim adapted to fit over an annular bead on the bottle neck; the depression is cylindrical and the flange has a slit 22 and a tab 22, which may facilitate removal of the flange. A lateral projection 19 is disposed on either side of the cap, and these projections serve as abutments for the thumbs or fingers when it is desired to remove the cap.
