Abstract

<PICT:0965427/C6-C7/1> A process of melting iron obtained by direct reduction of iron ore comprises forming iron powder or sponge into bars by moulding, with or without sintering, and using the bars as anodes for electric melting under a slag, the cathodes being fused metal in a continuous casting mould. As shown, a bar 1 made from powdered or spongy iron is fed into a pool 51 of slag covering a pool 5 of molten metal on the top of a continuous casting mould 2. The bar is made the anode, and the casting mould the cathode, of an electric circuit. The slag is maintained at a basicity of at least 1 by means of additions through a funnel 9 and tube 8 which may be heated electrically. The slag additions may take the form of a rod dipping into the slag layer. Specification 965,426 is referred to.
