Abstract

1,052,907. Ingot-casting machines and processes; ingot moulds. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 24, 1965 [Dec. 1, 1964], No. 48754/64. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A refining tower for the de-oxidation of copper is constructed of graphite and has equidistant longitudinal slots whereby heating efficiency is increased, the tower being enclosed in a fused silica envelope which can be evacuated to a high vacuum, and being heatable by means of induction coils surrounding the envelope. In a particular embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the tower consists of an upper crucible A in which the metal (with or without alloying constituents) is placed, a tripartite refining section C, D, E providing a stepped surface over which the metal flows, and a receiver H within which the product may be maintained molten to allow degasification to proceed. By suitable adjustment of coil Y the metal is then caused to solidify from the base upwards, thereby eliminating shrinkage cavities.
