Abstract
1,142,209. Making composite electric switch contacts; casting processes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 May, 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22127/65. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division H1] A contact for a vacuum switch (Figs. 1-4, not shown) is cast in a graphite mould 46 divided by a partition 54 into an upper compartment in which is placed a billet of copper and a lower compartment fitted with a graphite jig 48 supporting two cylindrical members 40, 42 of molybdenum or stainless steel. The mould is heated in a vacuum by an induction coil (not shown) to cause the copper to flow into the lower compartment around the members 40, 42. The casting is cooled from the base upwards by raising the induction coil. The finished casting is subsequently machined to provide an annular contact surface (22) concentric with the members 40, 42 and slotted (28) to provide a plurality of contact segments each of which includes a part of the members 40, 42 to give the contact segments resilience. The cylindrical insert members 40, 42 may be circumferentially corrugated to increase the resilience or apertured to reduce the resistance of the contact and if they are of stainless steel they may be coated with molybdenum to prevent reaction with the molten copper and with nickel to produce a good bond therewith.
