Abstract

1385674 Electroslag refining BRITISH STEEL CORP 24 March 1972 [5 Jan 1971] 460/71 Heading B3F In an electroslag refining process the slag 14 is melted in a mould having at least a part of its base portion made of carbon by electrically heating said portion, e.g. by using an induction coil 12. Once the slag has been melted the power supply to the coil 12 is switched off and the slag maintained in its molten condition in the usual way. The mould may consist of a lower graphite portion 6 and an upper steel, copper or graphite portion 8 insulated from the lower portion by an asbestos ring 10. It rests on a graphite block 2 and a metal base-plate 4 and may be water cooled. In a modification resistance heating is used to heat the lower mould portion 6 and thus melt the slag 14.
