A float-operated valve 3 for an oil burner comprises a spring member 31, one end 32 being secured in the cover 18 of a casing and the other end 36 being retained in a set position in the casing by means of a fusible material 35 such as a metal, adapted to melt at a temperature above a certain predetermined value, and thereby release the end 36 so that it strikes the valve spindle or a part connected thereto in order to close the valve. As shown in Fig. 2, a pivoted lever 11, 12 is provided with a roller 15 engaging with a pivoted lever 28 which passes through the end 10 of the valve spindle 4. An extension 26 passes through a slot 21 in the lever 28. In operation, if the level of the oil rises above a certain predetermined value, the float 5 abuts the end of the lever 11 so as to cause the roller to move into a position which permits the lever 28 to move downwardly under the action of a spring 20 and thereby locks the valve 3 in the fully closed position. As a fire precaution, the valve locking mechanism can be operated by means of a spring member 31, 32, Fig. 3, the end 32 abutting a shoulder 33 in the cover 18 of the casing and the end 32 being retained in a set position by means of a pellet of low-melting point material, such as solder. When the temperature rises above a certain value the pellet melts and allows an extension 36 of the end 31 to strike the extension 26 of the lever 12 and thus effects the actuating of the valve mechanism. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the spring member acts directly on the end 10 of the valve member to maintain it in the closed position.
