Abstract

505,478. Clockwork -actuated valves. ASSOCIATED APPLIANCES, Ltd. (Lerch, R.) Oct. 7, 1938, No. 29181. [Class 135] A valve which is automatically returned to an initial position after a preselected period has an operating member 16 movable against the action of a spring 20 through a distance corresponding to the operative range of the valve and through a further distance dependent on the preselected period in which it is operatively coupled to an escapement mechanism 15, the operating member 16 being released from the escapement mechanism for operation of the valve by the spring 20 when it has traversed back over the latter distance under the control of the escapement mechanism. As shown a gas cook 10 has a spindle 11 passing through a frame 12, 13 carrying the escapement train 15, and rotatably supporting a boss 17 on which the operating member 16 is mounted. The latter has a scale 18 visible through an opening in the cylindrical part 13. The spring 20 is secured at one end to the member 16 and at the other to a fixed post. The operating member 16 is formed internally with an interrupted gear 24 the plain portion of which corresponds to the operative range of the cock. The gear 24 meshes with the first pinion 25 of the escapement train 15, a spring 28 being provided to steady the pinion 25 when not in mesh with the gear 24. The operating member 16 has an abutment 35 movable in a groove 33 in a handle 29 non-rotatably but slidably mounted on the spindle 11. A neck 34 bridging the groove 33 is-engaged by the abutment 35 when the escapement is released from the operating member 16. 34a indicates the position to which the neck is set by the handle 29 for full opening of the cock. The cock may be manually-operated at any time simply by moving the handle 29 axially before turning it. Also the member 16 may be reset without waiting for the preselected period to elapse by moving the member axially. A friction clutch in the gear train also permits this as well as allowing the gear 25 to move without the escapement when the spring is being loaded. The operating member is held against a fixed stop 23 by the spring 20 which is partly loaded in the zero position of the operating member 16.
