Abstract

772,741. Thermally-actuated valves. MAG NETIC VALVE CO., Ltd. April 14, 1955 [May 24, 1954], No. 15173/54. Class 135. In a thermally operated valve for automatically shutting off the flow of fluid or finelydivided solid material when a predetermined temperature is reached in the vicinity of the valve, the valve closure member 13 is normally held in the open position by a plunger 30 which is supported by a fusible member 32 mounted within the valve casing 10 which plunger, on melting of the fusible member, automatically seals a passage 27 through which the fusible member is accessible from outside the valve casing. The passage or bore 27 is formed in a plug 25 screwed into the valve casing and provided at its lower end with a recess 28 and at its upper end with a transverse passage 29 and an enlarged bore in which the plunger 30 slides. The fusible member which is cylindrical has a spigot 33 engaging a recess in the upper end of a rod 34 mounted in the bore 27 and having a screw-threaded head 35 adjustable in the recess 28. A frusto-conical surface 31 on the plunger 30 seals the top of the bore 27 when the member 32 melts. Thereafter the rod 34 may be withdrawn and the fusible member replaced without any loss of the controlled fluid. The recess 28 is closed by a screw-plug 37. The head 35 may slide in the recess and be held in place by an extension of or a spigot on the plug 37. The valve closure member may be of any shape and may slide or pivot. As shown, the flap 13 is fixed to spindle 17 and co-operates with a seat 14 when released. The flap is reset by a rotatably and axially movable actuating spindle operable by a handle outside the valve body. The flap spindle has a squared or toothed end adapted to be engaged by a complementary socket or toothed part on the actuating spindle.
