In a method of knitting a seamless stocking on a circular knitting machine having at least two feeds the depth of the stitch draw alternates both along the courses and the wales to provide long and short stitches 6, 7 as in Fig. 5 to give a smooth appearance. It is stated that a certain evening out occurs after knitting. This method is carried out by providing alternate needles N 1 , N 2 with short and long butts 1, 2 which co-operate with alternately arranged stepped stitch cam assemblies 3, 4 and 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> at the knitting stations. The length of the butts 1, 2 differ by a distance 2a whereas the needle shank lengths l 1 , l 2 differ by a, the step of the cams also being 2a. Thus, at one station the draw of needles N 2 is greater by a, Fig. 1, while at the next station the draw of the needles N 1 is greater, Fig. 3.
