Abstract

1,268,970. Knitting. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 23 Sept., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 46892/69. Headings D1C and D1K. A seamless stocking is knitted as a tube with a tubular double ply portion projecting from the end, the first ply 22 having an inner terminal course 28 connected to the tube and the inner terminal course 30 of the second ply 27 and the outer terminal courses of the double ply portion including a draw yarn 35 by which the toe is closed. The stocking has a turned welt of heavy yarn and a leg and foot of relatively light yarn, the heel pocket being formed e.g. by reciprocatory knitting and of heavy yarn. The toe 17 comprises a single ply portion 20 e.g. of heavy yarn and a two-ply portion 21 of light weight yarn. The stocking may be knitted on a single cylinder machine with a welt dial 43 and main yarn guides 46 and auxiliary yarn guides 50 at stations 45, 47. The portion 20 is knitted at both knitting stations after which alternate needles 37a hold the stitches of course 26 while needles 37b knit at both knitting stations to complete the inner ply 22. A course is then knitted at the main station 45 preferably from a heavy yarn, to form draw thread 35. Course 32 is then knitted at main station 45 and then every other needle 37b, viz. needles 37c, is raised to tucking height at the auxiliary station to take the heavy yarn 35 while the remaining needles remain in non-knitting position after which courses 33 and 64 are knitted at the main station on all needles 37b to interlace yarn 35. The yarn finger feeding heavy yarn 35 remains in active position at the auxiliary station and, as ply 27 is knitted at the main station on needles 37b, the yarn 35 is drawn out of courses 32, 33 to form these courses into a tight bunch to close the toe. When ply 27 is complete, a course is knitted on all needles 37a, 37b at station 45 and then at station 47 to form a course of yarn 35 and then a few ravel courses to complete the stocking. In a modification, yarn 35 may be knitted into every other needle in course 33. The long float of yarn 35 extending on the outside of ply 27 may be caught in at intervals. A machine with more than two knitting stations may be used.
