964,556. Ammunition safety devices. C. O. J. NORDZELL. June 29, 1962, No. 25022/62. Heading F3A. A body charged with a main explosive is provided with a heat sensitive protective charge which is adapted at its igniting temperature to create an opening in the wall of the body without causing the main charge to detonate thereby minimizing the explosive effect on ignition of the main charge. In one embodiment, a projectile comprises a cover 3, which may have a handle, a detonator 4, a protective charge 5 and a plug 6 which may, for example, be made of wood, plastics, cork or metal. These components, preferably formed as a unit, are applied to the body while in storage, the cover 3 being of high thermal conductivity or alternatively provided with a channel 9 and a meltable seal 10 and the detonator 4 respectively containing a temperature-sensitive igniter or low explosive. On ignition of charge 5 a sufficiently large opening is formed to allow main charge 2 and its detonator 2a to burn or melt without detonating.
