963,721. Lasting; stiffeners. CAMPEX RESEARCH & TRADING CORPORATION. Dec. 28, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1961; Aug. 29, 1961], No. 46492/61. Heading A3B. A method of lasting the end of a shoe consists in using a stiffener which when lasted with the upper is flauid and mouldable but becomes rigid before the applied stress is removed. As described the stiffener-either a box toe or counter stiffener -consisting of a sheet of thermoplastic material is rigid at room temperature but becomes mouldable above a predetermined temperature and can be coated on one or both faces with a film of adhesive which is softened when heated above the predetermined temperature but is rigid and cohesive at a room temperature. The counter stiffener fits into the pocket between a lining 20 and the upper 21, and heat is then applied to soften the stiffener and adhesive and stress is then applied. The upper is mounted on a last L and stress is then applied using pincers N &c. The upper is moulded to shape by means of pads P &c. and auxiliary pads Z &c. The lasting margin of the upper, with part of the stiffener is then wiped across the insole S by wipers W &c. Cooling means may be provided in the wipers and/or the pressure pads to hasten the stiffening of the stiffener. Specification 963,725 is referred to.
