Abstract

A process for the preparation of 7-phenylheptan-1-ol and 7-phenyl-heptane-1, 4-diol comprises hydrogenating g -phenylpropyl-g -butyrolactone in the presence of a copper chromite hydrogenation catalyst. The lactone may be dissolved in dioxan and hydrogenated in the presence of 20-25% by weight of the copper chromite hydrogenation catalyst, using a pressure of 230-260 atmospheres gauged pressure at a temperature of 240-250 DEG C. The resulting mixture of 7-phenyl-heptane-1-ol and 7-phenyl-heptane-1, 4-diol is separated by fractional distillation. Specification 960,753 is referred to.
