Abstract
Lanoline is purified by hydrogenation at elevated pressure and temperature in the presence of a nickel-chromium catalyst comprising a major proportion of nickel and a minor proportion of combined chromium. A pressure of 290-310 atmospheres and a temperature of 250 DEG C., rising to 350 DEG C., may be used. The hydrogenated lanoline is filtered and then rectified under vacuum yielding a product suitable for use in ointments and cosmetics.
