Abstract

962,149. Hinges. SMITH WALLIS & CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1963 [March 29, 1962], No. 12007/62. Heading E2F. A hinge fitment for a projected window of the type which is adapted to be opened by being pivoted outwardly about an axis at the upper horizontal edge of the movable frame comprises a main stay 3 adapted to be pivotally connected at its upper and lower ends 4, 5 to the movable and fixed frame respectively, a slide member 9 engaging a guideway 8 adapted to be secured vertically on the fixed frame 2, a supplementary stay 13 pivotally connected at its upper and lower ends 15, 14 to the slide member and the main stay respectively, and a link 10 pivotally connected at its lower end 12 to the slide member and adapted to be pivotally connected at its upper end 11 to the movable frame 1, the relation between the dimensions of the stays and the link and the spacing of the pivot points being such that all the pivots will lie in the same vertical plane when the window is closed and the upper edge of the movable frame will move outwardly at a slower rate than the lower end. Preferably the main stay and the link are pivoted to an attachment bar 6 adapted to be fastened to the movable frame, the upper end 26 of this bar being pointed to co-operate with a complementary formation 28 at the top of the guideway when the window is closed. The slide 9 has a recess in which is located an expandable member comprising (Figs. 7, 9) two blocks 20, 21 constituting a rectangular formation divided along a diagonal. Centrally within this formation is a rectangular aperture 22 containing two shallow wedge-shaped blocks 24 coupled by a screw 25. Manipulation of the screw draws the blocks 24 together so that they co-operate with the tapered edges 23 of the aperture to force the blocks 20, 21 outwardly into frictional engagement with the sides 16 of the guideway. The link 10 and supplementary stay 13 may if desired be pivoted to the slide 9 at the same point.
