A casement stay comprises a stay bar E hinged about a horizontal axis F to an intermediate piece A which is in turn hinged about a vertical axis D to a fixing plate B secured to the window C and one or more stay pins H secured to the fixed window frame 9, the hinge between the intermediate piece A and the fixing plate B being located at the end of the fixing plate and at the end of the intermediate piece so that in the closed position of the window the intermediate piece extends substantially parallel to and close in front of at least a part of the fixing plate. As shown, fixing plate B has a lug B<SP>1</SP> at one end, which lug fits slidingly between the two horizontal faces on the lugs A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>2</SP> at one end of the intermediate piece A and is secured thereto by pivot pin D. Stay bar E has lug E<SP>1</SP> which fits between the parallel vertical faces of the two lugs A<SP>3</SP> and A<SP>4</SP> at the other end of the intermediate piece A and is secured thereto by pivot pin F. Alternatively, the lugs may be reversed, i.e. a single lug at the end of intermediate piece A engaging slidingly between two lugs at the end of the fixing plate B. The stay bar may be provided with a series of spaced holes cooperating with a stay bar pin or pins on the window frame.
