Abstract

Phenolic constituents are removed from water by contacting the water with crude oil, thereby desalting said crude oil while transferring a major portion of the phenols to said crude oil.ALSO:A crude oil is contacted with water containing phenolic contaminants, whereby the oil is desalted and the major portion of the phenols is transferred from the water to the oil. This oil is then separated by fractionation into a low boiling fraction substantially free of phenols, an intermediate phenol-containing fraction having an initial boiling point of approximately 150 DEG C. and a final boiling point of approximately 340 DEG C., and a higher boiling fraction substantially free of phenols. At least a part of the intermediate fraction is subjected to hydrogenative treatment at 150-650 DEG C. to recover an essentially phenol-free fraction, for example employing a hydrorefining catalyst such as the oxide or sulphides of cobalt and molybdenum on a refractory oxide such as alumina. Preferred pressures are 3.4 to 340 ats. using 1 to 20 moles H2 per mole of hydrocarbons. The catalyst preferably contains 1-10% of the cobalt compound and 2-15% of the molybdenum compound by weight. Other catalyst mentioned are nickel oxide or sulphide, tungsten sulphide, platinum, or palladium. Other refractory oxides include silica, magnesia, thoria, or zinc oxide, or mixtures thereof, either with alumina or especially with silica.
