Abstract
313,426. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 8, 1928. Catalysts for splitting off water from organic substances comprise non-vitreous alumina activated by deposition thereon of small amounts of oxides of heavy metals, especially of groups 1, 6, 7 and 8, or substances yielding such oxides under the working conditions. Alternatively, the activating agents may be substances having a dehydrogenating action such as nickel, copper, or silver, or compounds such as sulphides. selenides, phosphides, &c. Activating agents specifically mentioned are copper oxide, a mixture of copper and silver oxides, chromium oxide, manganic. oxide, nickel oxide, zinc sulphide, cobalt sulphide. The examples describe the preparations of dimethyl ether from methanol, isoprene from methylbutenol, amylene from amyl alcohol, and butylene from n-butyl alcohol.
