Abstract

Apparatus for classifying sand mixed with water comprises an endless moving belt screen 20 woven of a flexible synthetic material on to which sand-water mixture falls freely from a device 9 and conduits 17 above and/or below the screen for spraying. The screen is driven upwards by a roller 2 at one end and at the other passes around an idler roller 3 tensioned by a weight 8. The screen has longitudinal strengthening ribs of rubber spaced at intervals across its width and is slightly convex outwards. It has V-belts of rubber at its edges, which if above the top edge, co-operate with vertically adjustable grooved rollers (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) or, if below the top edge, run in grooves at each end of the rollers 2 and 3. In the latter instance the position of the grooves on the rollers is adjustable in the axial direction (Fig. 5, not shown). The device 9 consists of a trough extending across the screen with slots 11 and 12 along its length. When sand-water mixture falls from the trough on to the screen, the fine sand passes through it into a trough 15 whilst the coarser grains stay in the screen mesh until they are dislodged by a brush at 16 and a spray at 17 and pass over the roller 3 into a trough 18. The screen immediately below the device 9 is supported on rollers 13 and 14.
