An inking mechanism for the rotationally reversible plate cylinder 2 of a rotary press is arranged so that the greater part of the ink from the fountain 6 is applied by the forme roller 9 or 7 first contacting the cylinder in its rotation after impression regardless of the angular direction of this rotation. The rollers of the fountain 6, which comprises a pump-type inking system, and a supply roller 5 rotate unidirectionally and intermediate rollers 11, 12 are so mounted adjacent the roller 5 that on clockwise rotation of the cylinder 2 the roller 12 may be moved to simultaneously contact the roller 5 and a distributer roller 4 such that more ink is supplied to the cylinder via the roller 9 than is supplied via rollers 10, 3, 8 and 7. During anticlockwise rotation of the cylinder 2 the greater amount of ink passes to the cylinder via rollers 11, 3 and 7, the roller 12 in this instance being withdrawn from engagement with the rollers 5 and 4. As will be seen from the drawing the greater amount of ink in each case is conducted from either the roller 12 or roller 10 over the shorter path and thus reaches the cylinder first. The rollers 11 and 12 may each be mounted on an angularly displaceable lever for movement into and out of their inktransmitting, i.e. operative, position. As an alternative, however, only one intermediate roller, e.g. the roller 11, may be used in addition to the roller 10 and may then be arranged for positioning either in rolling contact with the rollers 5 and 10 or in rolling contact with the rollers 4 and 5.
