Abstract

959,924. Tamperproof cartons. AMERICAN CAN CO. May 1, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961], No. 16599/62. Heading B8P. Opposite end flaps 56, 58 of a carton have projections 35, 45 which, when the flaps are folded down and interlocked, take into corresponding cut-out portions of the other flap and engage under angled cuts 38, 43 so that the carton cannot be opened without mutilation of the locking elements. The carton is made from an integral blank A, Fig. 1, cut from a continuous web of sheet material, successive blanks A, A<SP>1</SP> being cut to dovetail together and thus eliminate waste. When the blank is erected panel 50 is folded about score line 10 to lie over panel 51, glue being applied along the edge of panel 50 and main panel 53 is folded about score line 12 so that panel 54 is adhered to panel 50. The partially erected carton is squared, flaps 55, 56, 59 folded in, and the end flaps 56, 58 simultaneously folded in about score lines 15, 17. As the outer edges of these panels approach each other the male elements 35, 45, 35 are bent slightly inwardly and pass under the opposed female elements and become locked, Fig. 3, by the engagement of the elements with the angled cuts 38, 43. This locking prevents lateral shifting of the end panels, and renders the carton tamperproof. In a further embodiment two full narrow side panels give uninterrupted printing surfaces.
