[Class 18] In boxes or cartons of cardboard, millboard, &c. preferably having four walls and of the kind formed from a single blank with closure flaps on the ends thereof wherein the closure is effected by interlocking two opposed flaps formed on the sides of the body portion. of the blank, the flaps are shaped by cutting away portions thereof to form a tongue on each flap, transverse slits being provided in the flaps at the intersections of the tongues and the uncut portions of the flaps, closure being effected by engaging the slit in one flap with the slit in the other so that the tongues overlap, the ends of the tongues being concealed by uncut portions of the flaps. As shown in Fig. 2, the flaps 1, 2 arc rectangular and each tongue is formed by cutting first along a diagonal of the flap and then along a line at right angles to the freed outermost edge of the flap, the slits 9, 10 being of such length that when engaged they allow the tongues 7, 8 to overlap and lie flat. The closure cannot be unlocked without damaging the tongues adjacent the slits. The arrangement of interlocking flaps may be used for locking the sides or parts of a box or carton for erection purposes. As shown in Fig. 4, the side 11 of a box has a flap 12 cut as shown to form a tongue 13 having a transverse slit 14, whilst the side 15 is formed with a tongue 16 and slit 17. The sides are locked by passing the tongue 16 behind the flap 12 and the tongue 13 behind the side 15, the slits 14, 17 being engaged as above described.
