J1me 1930- J. P. SHEARER I FOLDING PAPER BOXES Filed Jan. 26, 1928 INVENTOR dohn hearev BY 7 l A1; ATTORNEY Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STA E JOHN" ron'rnn snnnnnn,
or NEWARK, NEW YORK FOLDING PAPER BOXES Application filed January 26, 1%)28. Serial No. 249,721.
The present invention relates to paper box blanks and an object thereof isto provide a construction which may be fed mechanically from a folded position to a set-up position 5 without danger of being destroyed'by the feeding mechanism.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinationsof parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: r Fig. 1 is a'planviewof the blank; Fig. 2 shows theblank in the folded condition in which it is fed; by the mechanical feeding means; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line'3-3, Fig. 2.
In the illustrated embodimentof the invention 1, 2, 3, and .4 indicate four sections of a blank adapted tobe folded on the scored lines 5 and connected by a-flap' extension 6 to provide the side walls of the box. In this instance, each of the sections 1 2, 3, and 4 have flap extensions 1 233 and 4? at opposite ends whichare adapted to be'folded in overlapping relationin order to form the end walls of the box. Theside walls 1 and 4; are bent in overlapping relation to the side walls 2 and 3 and the flap or extension ,6 is
adhesively secured to the side wall 1 as. shown'in Figs. 2 and 30f. the drawings;
The form of box so far, describedis well known in this art. The blank in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is stacked with others in a hopper and by known feeding mechanism is fed from the bottom of the hopper. In this feeding, many ofthese blanks are new This result is secured, in this instance, by
providing a readily fracturable connection such as the small integral connection 7, be' tween two adjacentend flaps preferably at each end of the blank, so that the two connected sections are held against lateral displacement. In this instance, the extension 2 and 3 are connected so that when the blank is folded in the condition shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the extensions 2? and 3* cannot shift laterally to interlock with the extens sions 1 and 4t? of an adjacent blank. This invention does away with considerable loss of these blanks and at thesametime increases the quantity production.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
As a new article ofmanufacture,a folded 7 box formed of a single blank having four side sections secured togethenand flaps .extended from eachend of each said side sections, two of said side sections having a readily fracturable connection between adjacent edges of their flaps at both ends of the sections spaced from the ends of the flaps so that the box may lie in a folded condition in V a stackandprovide a flat substantiallyun interrupted. surface on one side which I will prevent its flaps interlocking with the flaps of an adjacent folded box in the stack when the box is removed from the stack in a line I transversely of the side sections.
, JOHN PORTER SHEARER. f
destroyed due to the fact that the end flaps 1', 2*, '3, and 4, of one blank will get out 40 of alignment and interlock with the end flaps of the blank next above it so that when the feeding mechanism engages the lowest blank in the hopper the interlocking will cause. a destruction of one or both of'the interlocking blanks and at the same time cause thestopping of the operations in'the factory, thus reducing the production of the plantlpA purpose of this invention is to prevent this interlocking between the end flaps of the blank while they are in the feedinghopper.
