BOX OR Specification of Letters Patent.
CARTON.
Patented June 29,1909.
Application filed September 28, 1908. Serial No. 465,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thaihL C OOLEDGE C. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Norfolk, in the countyof Norfolk, State of Virginia,
rovements in Boxes or artons, the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriers, cartons, boxes, packages, etc, and more particularly to such as are made of bendable material such as pasteboard, leather, etc.
Its object is to form from a single blank a device of the character described which can be readily formed up from the blank and securely covered, the parts folding and interlocking in such manner that it cannot be readily opened without destroying the lock ing features of the box.
n the drawing herewith accompanying and making part of this ap lication, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blan from which the box is to be formed, the dotted lines showin the lines on which the blank is to be fo ded, and Fig. 2 is a ers ective view of the box formed from the blan shown in Fig. 1, the cover being shown open.
Same letters of reference refer to like parts.
In said drawing A shows the bottom of the box, B one side, 0 the other side and D the part of the cover which serves for the top of the box. The ends are formed of similar parts so that a description of one end will be equally applicable to the other end. The end is formed by flaps EE and N extending outwardly from the sides B and C and the bottom A respectively, said flaps E E being rovided with V-shaped indents F, one si e cut deeper than the other, forming interlocking shoulders C, and with tonguereceivin openings L, and said flap N being provide with interlocking tongues O and a tongue-receiving opening P. When the blank is open as shown in Fig. 1, said indents extend in the same direction.
The side B is provided with tongue-receiving openings and the cover D is provided with a fla it extending out from the side thereof, am flaps S extending out from the ends thereof, flaps S being provided with interlocking tongues \V and flap R with one or more interlocking tongues T. The dart shaped and the tongue-receiving openings are formed by removin a rectangular part about equal to the thic ness of the material of which the of which have invented new and useful Irnl blank is made and then slitting the blank at one side of the opening short distances beyond the openings as seen at Q. The tapering character of the tongues permits them to be thrust into said tongue-receiving O)61l ings, the square shoulders thereof locking them firmly therein so that to open the box it will be necessary to break the tongues. if i desired the side part B and the flaps N may I be provided with flanges adapted to be I folded inward as shown in Fig. 2.
- The box is formed by bending the parts i on the dotted lines shown in Fig. l in the following manner. The sides l3 and are bent on lines 11 and I to a vertical position rcla- The flaps E-l are The llap N-is then folded on line i up against the end, the tongues O beingforced into the tongue-re ceiving openings L. The box is then closed by folding down cover I) on line rests upon the top of the box. The ilap R is then folded on line H down the opposite side of the box and the tongue or tongues T forced into the tongue-receiving opening or openings V. The end flaps S are then folded on lines S down upon the ends and the tongues W forced into the tongue-receiving openings 1 thus securely looking all parts of the box together making a very -lirm substantial box.
The advantages of my improved box or carton are that it is formed of a single blank without separate fastening devices. not be opened without breaking the locking tongues. It is readily assembled from the blank and is practically non-refillable.
Having thus described my invention and its use I claim -1. A box or .carton formed of a single blank comprising a bottom, sides and top, the sides provided with flaps adapted to fold and interlock to form the ends of the box, the bottom provided with laps adapted to fold against said ends and the top provided with flaps adapted to fold down against said ends and a flap ada ited to fold down against the side, one side, t 1e flaps on the sides and the flaps on the bottom being provided with M. until it It can- F 2. A be); or carton formed of single blank coinpi'isii'ig a bottom, sides and top, the sides provided with flaps having indents and interlocking shoulders and adopted to fold and interlock to form the ends 01" the box, the bottom provided with flaps adapted to fold against said ends and the top provided with flaps adapted to fold down against said ends and a flap adapted to fold down against the sides, one side, the flaps on the sides and the flaps on the bottom being provided with tongue-receiving openings, the flaps on the bottom being provided with looking tongues adapted to take into the tongue-receiving openings in the flops on the sides and the flaps on the cover being provided with locking tongues adapted to take into the tongee reeeiving openings in the flops on the bottom and with tongues adapted to take into the tongue-receiving openings in the side.
i i l 3. A he); or eerton tornied oi a single hianl: comprising :1. hottoni, sides and ten, the sides provided with flaps adapted to fold and interlock to form the ends of the hex, the bottom provided with flaps adopted to fold against said ends and. the top provided with flops adapted to fold down agsinstsaid ends and a flap adapted to fold down against theside. one side, the flops on the sides, and the t on the bottom being provided ee-receiving openings and slits extending out from one side thereof, the flaps on the bottom being provided with looking tongues adopted to ttlkQ into the tongue-receiving openings in the flaps 011 the sides and the flaps on the cover being provided with locking tongues adapted to take into the tongue-receiving openings in the flaps on the bottom and with tongues adapted to take into the tongue-receiving openings in the side.
in testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speci'hestion in presence of two subscribing witnesses this twenty second day 01' September, 1908.
