959,139. Recording apparatus. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. May 2,1962 [May 2,1961], No. 16807/62. Heading G1J. A device for counting vehicles and classifying them into types or sizes comprises transmitters A, B, C spaced as shown with the distance between transmitters A, B being greater than the approximate axle spacing of two wheeled vehicles but less than the axle spacing of light four wheeled vehicles and the spacing of transmitters B, C is greater than the axle spacing of light four wheeled vehicles but less than that of heavy lorries. Each transmitter A, B, C emits a pulse each time an axle passes it and these are recorded by a recorder R1 which distinguishes by means of a punched hole or scribe as shown in Fig. 3, which transmitter the pulse came from and the order in which the pulses are received. From the order and number of the pulses a vehicle can be classified according to type e.g. AA, BB, CC is a two wheeled vehicle, ABA, BCC a light four wheeled vehicle. The transmitters may be operated by hydraulic detecting means and additional transmitters operated by photocells may be provided to distinguish the profile of the vehicle.
