Abstract

1,234,352. Train control system. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 1 Oct., 1969 [2 Nov., 1968], No. 48174/69. Heading B7N. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] The distance between two vehicles 1, 2, e.g. trains, constrained to move along a predetermined path is determined and used for anti-collision purposes, by the front vehicle I inducing a C.W. signal in an open transmission line 3 laid alongside the path, successively modulating the signal at spaced points 4 along the line, picking off the modulated signal at the following vehicle 2, and determining the distance as proportioned to the depth of modulation on the signal. Each vehicle carries a transmitter 1a, 2a, a receiver 1b 2b and an aerial 1c 2c. Switches 1d and 2d normally couple transmitter 1a to aerial 1c and aerial 2c to receiver 2b, but can reverse the path. The modulation is carried out in discrete steps in transistors 4 using a modulation signal from generator 5. The receiver 2b is connected to demodulator means 8 to give a signal at the input to gate 7 proportional to the modulation and distance. A detector 6 ensures that gate 7 is only enabled when the overall signal strength is above a predetermined threshold. The distance output of gate 7 is caused to activate a brake system 11, via control means 10 when the distance has dropped to collision possibility dimensions. The stopping or slowing down of vehicle 1 is detected by means 12, detecting the rate of change of the degree of modulation, and rapid decrease of the distance causes rapid application of brakes. A vehicle wheel/road adhesion measuring means 14, may control the rate of braking to overcome dangers of skidding.
