A mechanism for stopping a yarn twisting spindle upon breakage of the yarn passing to the bobbin on that spindle comprises a clutch provided between the spindle and a driven whorl such that upon yarn breakage compressed air operated means simultaneously releases said clutch and actuates a spindle brake. In the ring twisting arrangment shown a spindle 14 (see Fig. 4), removeably located by bearings 18,19, is driven from a whorl 44 through a clutch which comprises the upper surface of the whorl 44 and a downwardly urged member 46, 48 slideably keyed in the spindle blade. A brake plate 40 surrounding the top of the whorl 44 is mounted on pistons 34, located in upstanding cylinders 22, 22<SP>1</SP> to which compressed air may be pumped so as to raise plate 40 to lift the clutch member 46, 48 and so interrupt the drive to the spindle and brake the spindle. A cap 57 having sprung arms 63, 63<SP>1</SP> is provided on the spindle for holding it down. As shown in Fig. 1 each yarn to be twisted passes from a package C, through a drop wire 73, between rollers 66, 67 and 68 and through a further yarn sensing guide to pass to the traveller on the ring D Upon yarn breakage either between a package C and roller 66 or between roller 68 and the traveller, , a suitable mechanical linkage causes the operation of a plunger 84 of an air valve V so that compressed air is supplied, via a conduit 94, to the cylinders 22, 22<SP>1</SP> to lift the pistons 34 and plate 40 and thus interrupt the spindle drive and brake the spindle. In an alternative form the air valve is operated through an electrical linkage.
