[Also in Division F4] A ventilating fan comprises a fan and driving motor mounted within a short duct and pivoted louvres which close the duct when the fan is not in operation and are opened by the action of a solenoid which is switched simultaneously with the motor. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 connected louvres 48 are opened against a spring 52 by an arm 44 pivoted at 45 and having a roller 46 bearing on a plate 47 of one of the louvres 48. The arm 44 is rocked by a segmental pinion 42 which is connected through a spring 38 with an arm 35 rocked about a pivot 36 by the core 32 of a solenoid 31. The spring 38 serves to allow the solenoid core 32 to move normally if the louvres become jammed. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the two arms are pivoted about a common axis and directly connected by a spring so that they normally move in the manner of a bell crank. The solenoid in either case is mounted with its axis horizontal and may be connected in series with the fan motor, or if the latter is of a capacitor run three lead reversing type the solenoid winding may be divided into two equal parts connected across the two motor windings. Alternatively the solenoid may replace the condenser. According to the Provisional Specification the louvres may be gravity biased towards their closed position, they may be provided at the inner or the outer end of the duct, may be mounted in a casing removable from a part -holding the solenoid assembly and may be made by injection moulding of plastics material. The removable casing may also be of plastics material and may be held in place by a spring catch. The louvres may be actuated by a bellcrank lever, one arm of which is a leaf spring acted on by the solenoid core without being attached to it.
