Abstract
958,493. Arc furnaces. NIPPON TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE PUBLIC CORPORATION. May 4, 1960, No. 15806/60. Heading H5H. An arc furnace includes a central furnace chamber flanked on either side by a side chamber, aligned openings in the dividing walls permitting an arc to pass between electrodes constituted by the wall of each side chamber remote from the furnace, which walls also each have an aligned opening ; and means for introducing a controlled flow of cooling fluid into the side chambers to constrict, and thereby raise the temperature of, the arc passing therethrough. The furnace chamber 7 is formed by the central section of a cylinder 1, an arc struck between copper electrodes 2, 2<SP>1</SP> passing therethrough by means of openings 5, 5<SP>1</SP> in the dividing walls 4, 4<SP>1</SP> of ceramic or watercooled copper. Material to be treated is introduced into and discharged from the furnace through ports 8 and 9, and a controlled flow of air is introduced into chambers 6 and 6<SP>1</SP> through ports 10, 10<SP>1</SP> for cooling and constricting the arc, the penetration of electrode contamination into the furnace chamber 7 being prevented by the flow of the air out through openings 3, 3<SP>1</SP>.
