Abstract

979,147. Electric glass furnace electrodes. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Aug. 12, 1963 [Aug. 10, 1962], No. 31724/63. Heading H5H. An electrode assembly for a glass-meiti a furnace wherein the assembly is housed in cavity 12 in the furnace wall 13 has the electrode 44, of molybdenum, carried in a steel holder 37 set in a cavity 35 formed by members 27, 30, 32a-32d of refractory material which are themselves housed in the cavity 12 in the furnace wall, the cavity 12 being provided with a conduit 23 and the cavity 35 with a conduit 49 both of which extend outwardly through the furnace wall 13 so as to define a passageway 50 the end of which is sealed with a semiplastic material 66, the passage-way 50 being supplied with helium at a predetermined rate by a pipe 72 from a chamber 76 and exhausted therefrom by a second pipe 74 and a container 79. The steel electrode holder 37 is provided with an axial bore 41 having a perforated pipe 52 therein and which is connected to a pipe 54 extending through the furnace wall 13 concentrically with the conduit 49, thereby forming passage-ways through which water may flow to cool the electrode 44, the flow being indicated by arrows from an inlet pipe 57 to an outlet 58. Electrical connection to the electrode assembly is made by a silver band 61 secured to the conduit 49.
