Abstract

1,133,359. Tuyeres. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 30 Nov., 1966 [1 Dec.. 1965], No. 53603/66. Heading F4B. A tuyere, particularly for injecting inert gas into a metal melt for degassing, comprises a conduit 15 extending through the wall of a vessel 12, a nozzle 20 at the end of the conduit 15 and a refractory sheath 21 enclosing the nozzle 20 and at least the immersed part of the conduit 15 and extending beyond the outlet end of the nozzle to form a discharge passage 24 of the same diameter as the nozzle. As shown, the refractory sheath is formed as an inner coating 21 and an outer casing 22 which is sealed to the wall of the vessel by fillets 23. The inlet end of the conduit 15 has a conductive stopper member 26 arranged so that molten metal passing up the conduit is frozen at the end before reaching the gas supply. The gas is supplied through a vertical pipe 18, of greater length than the depth of the melt in the vessel as a further protection.
