PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF POUR LE TRAITEMENT DES MATIERES METALLIQUES A L'ETAT
LIQUIDE.
<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>

<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=12.1>

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR TREATING METAL MATERIALS IN THE STATE
LIQUID.
We know the manufacture of spherolithic cast iron, that is to say cast iron with a spherical graphitic structure, by adding magnesium,
<EMI ID = 1.1>
Treatment of cast iron with magnesium presently presents the greatest advantages, it is almost exclusively this material that is used. The proportion of magnesium in the cast iron is from 0.015 to 0.5%.
The addition of magnesium in liquid iron is made con-

magnesium floats on the surface of the bath and, upon loading in solid form, is ejected from the bath with intense flame formation
and light. There is thus a great loss of magnesium; one is not sure of having the exact addition quantities and, moreover, the service personnel are in great danger.
It is for this reason, that one uses the alloys of magnesium especially with nickel; other elements are often added to it, to a relatively small extent, such as; copper, silicon, manganese, calcium, aluminum etc. as well as residual fractions

use of such magnesium alloys, which are, according to current theories, high percentage, it is pointed out that the temperatures of the molten metallic material should exceed the point as little as possible.

by 30 - 50%, so that, taking into account the relatively high price, the overall cost of spherical graphite cast iron is significantly increased. The per se desirable widespread use and introduction of spherolithic cast iron, with its great known advantages, from the point of view of high strength and comparatively high elongation value, is thus considerably reduced and hampered, by the fact that the economic conditions and the technical application, as well as the safety of the manufacturing process, are still not resolved in a way that satisfies all the requirements, despite the extensive research carried out in recent years in this field.
The invention is based on the principle that an essential condition for the elimination of the present difficulties is to avoid a simultaneous addition.

As, in particular by virtue of the above-mentioned different physical conditions between magnesium and iron, the <EMI ID = 7.1>

We also have
already tried to gradually introduce the total amount of magnesium into the molten material. It is then the introduction of a wire, the insufflation of powder or vapors by means of inert support gases, to

not yet considered as a technical process but which have already been tried in practice, we have undoubtedly been limited to the small dimensions and quantities customary for such tests. In addition, despite the useful indications found in some documentary studies, no actual use of pure magnesium or even only of a magnesium content exceeding ordinary conditions under normal conditions is known to date. preliminary alloy.
And this is perfectly understandable, since, on the one hand, even the remark concerning the possible addition of pure magnesium, while respecting well-determined temperature conditions, is immediately followed by
<EMI ID = 10.1>
maximum of 40% magnesium and that, on the other hand, the works of professionals always give explicit warnings against "the dangerous use of metallurgical magnesium". In the same vein, it is also said that the additive methods are still in full development 'and that for most methods the certainty of obtaining results is very minimal.
<EMI ID = 11.1>
economic problem, must finally find the way, allowing
<EMI ID = 12.1>
a molten material, as a reaction material without adding, or with considerably less addition of other alloying elements. To this end, thanks to the invention, the very strong explosive and oxidizing tendency of metallic magnesium or of a high percentage magnesium alloy is brought under control, by the fact that the magnesium, completely pure or of a similar degree.

adjustable manner, to the molten material by a device arranged outside the treatment tank, in a deep place, either in specifically very small quantities and adapted to the circumstances, or with the overall dosage distributed over a determined period of time. ..
<EMI ID = 14.1> other features of the invention. In the first case, a gaseous medium is blown into the cast iron material to be treated, together with the reaction material, not, as in other experiments, as a support for it, but simply to push it down. It therefore only comes into contact with the latter via a face corresponding to the cross section of the supply pipe or is optionally separated therefrom by an interposed layer, composed of salts to prevent mixing or a reaction. Consequently, the compression gas in question can hardly act at its normal temperature in the direction of undesirable cooling, on the molten material and on the reaction material to be liquefied before introduction. The mechanical production of the pressure takes place in a known manner by means of a piston.
The device for carrying out the method according to the invention 'generally consists of a group, connected to the outer side of the tank.
treatment, in which the reaction material is brought to the state necessary to be introduced into the molten material to be treated. In particular, such a group can include a melting device, which can be heated in an adjustable manner, for the reaction material, and be, connected to a gas line at adjustable pressure and completely insulating, so that a pressure, in the sense of its introduction into the molten material to be treated, can be exerted on the reaction material found in the group. In addition, the group in question is equipped, at the place provided for filling the reaction material, with a gas-tight isolable airlock, alternatively, on the side of the inlet and the outlet, through which the airlock is able to fill the reaction material without interruption of service.
At each location of the treatment tank intended to introduce the reaction material into the molten material - possibly one sufficient - is arranged an exhaust body, preferably specially adapted and replaceable. Each exhaust body comprises, with a view to as uniform a distribution as possible of the reaction material in the molten material, above all, when the latter is introduced through the bottom,
from the treatment tank, a central inlet borehole and several output boreholes directed to various sides. Each exhaust body is made

award-winning, for example magnesium oxide, which, depending on the particular conditions given, is chemically neutral and physically stable.
The object of the invention is shown in the drawing, in several exemplary embodiments relating to various details of the overall construction arrangement.
Figure 1 shows, to illustrate the simplified and 'schematized process, a casting crucible or the like, in which a molten material is treated according to the invention, with magnesium introduced in the liquid state, including certain additional devices for the flow
or recovery of excess magnesium.

Figures 3 and 4 show, in two operating positions, a device for mechanically producing the pressure intended to introduce the reaction material.
FIG. 5 shows, on a larger scale and with the exhaust body arranged therein, a place for introducing the reaction material into the treatment tank.

which is connected, at the highest point, an exhaust pipe 6. The conical upper part of the hood is crossed by a coil 7; in which a refrigerant flows. Below this coil is
a flat tank 8, which, opposite the wall of the hood, leaves an annular passage, and is in communication with a pipe inclined.
When the liquid magnesium used as the reaction material is introduced into the molten material, in very small amounts depending on the small outlet diameter of the feed system il, a strong reaction occurs im- mediately between the magnesium and oxygen sulfur and all other substances contained in iron and with which it combines
magnesium. In addition, the magnesium immediately evaporates on entering the molten material, since the temperature of the bath is considered.
<EMI ID = 18.1>
in whole fusion simultaneously, more or less strongly, in motion. Optionally, the boiling temperature of the reaction material can be increased, within the limits given by the characteristics of the invention, by the use of an alloy, for example of magnesium with cerium or nickel, and thereby slowing down the evaporation process.
In any event, the reaction material rises as a result of its lower specific gravity, as enveloping bubbles with maximum surface area, and the substances driven out of the iron, into the space above the bath.
Depending on how the process is carried out, the vapors coming out of the bath can be immediately evacuated or left to act for a while on the surface of the bath.
By inserting a condenser, formed in this execution
<EMI ID = 19.1>
8 and discharged through line 2 or returned to the circuit for new use, while the non-condensed gases are discharged through the pipe
6.
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, after the end of the process, for a determined quantity of liquid iron, the reservoir 1 and the hood 2. are separated and the reservoir is placed in the pouring position. After a new bath filling in the tank and replacement of the hood, the process continues. If the process tank is properly designed, continuous application of the process is possible.
A particular advantage of the process, according to the intention, is that the molten materials, besides the transformation, such as for example the formation of a spherolithic structure of a normal mass of cast iron, are simultaneously degassed to a great extent. or completely, due to the low potential pressure. '
In FIG. 2 is fixed, to the lower side of a casting crucible 10, a group 11 containing a melting device for the magnesium introduced in the solid state, by an airlock 12 which can be isolated with gas, in a sealed manner, alternately from the side of the entrance and exit.
