<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
continue.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROCESS FOR TREATING STEEL AND
INSTALLATION THEREFORE OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method of treating steel in order to significantly reduce non-metallic inclusions and oxides.
The invention also relates to an installation for the distribution distributor of liquid steel in order to allow the implementation of this process.
TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The production of steel leads to the appearance in it of non-metallic exogenous impurities or oxides in the form of inclusions. These inclusions cause considerable difficulties during subsequent shaping, in particular by rolling, but are above all the cause of significant difficulties in the production of steel itself, as will be indicated below.
Many techniques for treating cast iron and steel using gas streams admitted into the liquid material using distributors or lances are known, with a view to carrying out various treatments and more specifically to try to eliminate foreign elements.
In the particular case of eliminating inclusions, recourse is often made to a basic reaction powder placed on the surface of the liquid steel which makes it possible to trap the inclusions.
The techniques developed in recent decades involve the use of the continuous or casting sector
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
keep on going. In these techniques the liquid steel coming from a ladle is led into a distributor. The most common forms of these distributors are the classic "bathtub" form or more elaborate forms called V-shaped
The flow takes place in the distributor from the pocket side to the outlet side nozzle (s). Conventional protections for casting jets do not prevent reoxidation of the casting jet and transformation of aluminum into alumina and other oxidizable metallic compounds into their corresponding oxides.
In addition, in the steel resulting from the treatment of the liquid steel in the ladle, metallic oxides of silicon, titanium, vanadium, cerium and zirconium remain in variable quantities according to the analysis of the steel. These oxides settle normally during ladle metallurgy treatments, but small inclusions (<50 microns) settle very slowly and are found in the casting steel at the distributor.
These macro and micro-inclusions greatly degrade the quality of the steel that is continuously cast and, moreover, by their attachment to the walls, the flow nozzles disturb the flows until the casting tube closes and the casting stops prematurely. .
In order to avoid the reduction or clogging mentioned above, a method of rapid decantation of macro and micro-inclusions has therefore been proposed which consists in injecting an inert gas from the bottom of the distributor and this by means of a bar. refractory bonded to the concrete of the distributor.
Carried by the gas flow which causes an upward current in the distributor, the macro and microinclusions are deposited on the surface of the liquid bath.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A baffle system can optionally and preferably be used to direct the flow streams and extend these flows to increase the efficiency of settling.
A basic slag of very precise composition and adapted to the quality of the steel can also serve as a trap to capture these inclusions and prevent them from following the flow of liquid steel towards the pouring nozzle.
This technique is unsatisfactory both in terms of its efficiency and in terms of installation cost. In fact, the injected inert gas is released in the form of large bubbles having a relatively high rate of rise, ultimately resulting in reduced efficiency.
The present invention proposes to remedy the drawbacks of the solutions of the prior art.
CHARACTERISTIC ELEMENTS OF THE INVENTION
The main subject of the invention is a method for treating steel with a view to reducing the quantity of inclusions in a continuous casting distributor using an inert gas medium, characterized in that said inert gas medium is injected through the bottom of the distributor through a porous piece adapted to the shape of the bottom of the distributor.
This technique ensures a homogeneous distribution of fine bubbles of inert gas allowing the settling of inclusions to be optimized.
In a manner known per se, the surface of the liquid steel is covered with a basic powder (basic slag with reactive cover) intended to capture the impurities trapped by the gas bubbles such as the aluminas and to prevent them from being driven by the flow of steel.
The size of the pores of the porous part is chosen so as to form bubbles of an average size of a few microns, resulting in a speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
upward of the order of 5 to 50 liters / min of inert gas in a steel bath.
The gas used is advantageously argon or nitrogen which are the most commonly used.
To allow the implementation of this process, it appeared appropriate to equip a continuous casting distributor with a porous refractory piece which can be placed at the bottom of the distributor and which follows the shape of this bottom.
Advantageously, the refractory piece is in the form of a bar crossed in the middle of an inert gas supply pipe.
This bar is preferably arranged after an opening arranged near the bottom of the distributor in a first wall which separates the chamber where the steel flows from the pocket and the volume of the rest of the distributor.
After the bar, there is optionally a second wall which is pierced with a hole in its upper part, this hole being oriented upwards at an angle of 10 to 300.
The steel flows first from the chamber where the steel enters from the ladle, under the first wall and then through this hole from above towards the part of the distributor where the casting nozzle (s) is located.
At least the last two chambers of the three chambers thus formed by the two walls are preferably covered with a basic slag of reactive cover.
The invention will be described in more detail in the description of an embodiment given by way of nonlimiting example which will make it possible to recognize other details and additional characteristics of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIG. 1 represents a vertical section of a distributor provided with a porous refractory part in the form of a bubbling bar crossed in its middle by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the inert gas supply pipe.
Figure 2 shows (a sectional view) of two embodiments of a porous refractory piece.
Figure 3 shows a partial perspective view of the distributor with such a bar and provided with two partition walls.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EXECUTION MODE
In a distributor 1 is disposed a rod 3 made of a porous refractory material connected to a supply pipe 5 of the inert gas, connected by a pipe 7 to a source of inert gas (not shown).
Figures 2 show sectional views of such a bar 3 constituting the porous refractory piece.
As shown in Figure 3, the distributor is separated by walls 11 and 13 into three chambers 15, 17 and 19.
The bar 3 is disposed after the wall 15 which separates the chamber where the steel flows from the pocket and the rest of the volume of the distributor, the passage of the steel taking place under this wall 15 and the bar 3 being disposed approximately at height of the lower part of this wall 11.
A second wall 13 is pierced with a hole 21 in its upper part, this hole is preferably oriented upwards at an angle of 10 to 300 relative to the vertical and towards the chamber 19.
The steel therefore flows from the top towards the chamber 19 which comprises at its bottom the casting nozzle (s) (not shown).
EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS
To determine the optimal results, various tests have been undertaken which relate to: the shape and position of the bar in the distributor with or without overflow wall which indicate that the shape shown with overflow wall is the most advantageous;
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the quality of the porous refractory which suggests that a concrete of 40 to 80% alumina (Andalusite or bauxite) is particularly suitable close to the quality of the base concrete at the bottom of the distributor; - the flow of inert gas in the bar which is applied with a pressure varying from 0.5 to 3 Bars for a flow of 5 to 50 liters / min of inert gas for a distributor having a useful volume of a few m3;
- the quality of the basic powder for trapping inclusions, the analysis of which varies according to the qualities of steel, for which a composition by weight in the range of
CaO from 55 to 75% Si02 from 6 to 15% Al20) from 5 to 12%
C from 2 to 15% seems particularly interesting. the slag analysis of the basic powder which shows that under these optimal conditions, the Ca / Si ratio varies from 9 for the starting powder to 2 in the slag after casting with a significant enrichment of all the metal oxides (Al2O3, SiO2 , TiO2, CrOg, V);
It is observed that the technique described makes it possible to achieve: a longer duration of the continuous casting without clogging of the distributor nozzle by the decantation of all the oxides in chamber 17 and action of the basic slag trapping in chambers 17 and
19;
- perfect inclusiveness of the steel cast in the form of slabs, blooms or billets.
