<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
- même en régime stabilisé, du fait des faibles moyens de contrôle de la vitesse d'alimentation en acier liquide dont on dispose, on peut constater d'une part, une variation importante du niveau d'acier dans la lingotière et d'autre part, un accroissement de la vitesse d'écoulement de l'acier sous le ménisque formé dans la lingotière en question ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
La mise en oeuvre d'une busette suivant l'invention a permis de constater que ce profilage particulier des bras de l'organe répartiteur a pour effet d'imposer à l'acier introduit dans la busette un mouvement de rotation, ce dernier ayant pour résultat de stabiliser l'écoulement dans la busette, et l'association constructive dans une même busette dudit profilage des bras avec une forme des ouïes telle que ci-dessus a eu comme conséquence une forte diminution de la vitesse de sortie de l'acier hors de la busette ;

L'utilisation de la busette de l'invention dans le contexte d'une installation de coulée en continu d'acier a permis de constater les faits suivants : - un écoulement plus stable à l'intérieur du conduit formant la busette ; - une vitesse de sortie de l'acier plus faible qu'avec une busette conventionnelle pour un même débit, - une diminution des variations de niveau du ménisque dans la lingotière ; - un entraînement beaucoup plus faible aussi bien de poudre de coulée que de bulles de gaz ou d'inclusions ; - une variation très faible dans la pression d'injection du gaz ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Nozzle for continuous casting of steel.
Field of the invention.
The present invention relates to a nozzle for continuously casting steel, more particularly a so-called rotating jet nozzle, that is to say such that the steel undergoes during its crossing a rotational movement which persists after its entry into the continuous ingot mold which is supplied by the nozzle in question. State of the art.
The technique of continuous steel casting is currently well known. Schematically, it consists in supplying molten steel to a cooled mold, called a continuous casting ingot mold, the latter being open at its lower end, and in extracting therefrom a partially solidified continuous ingot It goes without saying that conditions of application are applied. cooling of the ingot mold such that a solidified surface layer is formed on the ingot sufficiently thick for it to resist the ferrostatic pressure exerted by the still liquid core of the ingot.
In general, molten steel is introduced into the ingot mold by means of a nozzle, that is to say a tubular element disposed between the distributor basket and the ingot mold.
The molten steel is first poured into a distribution basket provided with a closure member capable of stopping the flow of steel, then said distribution basket feeds at least one tubular nozzle and finally, the nozzles each feed a continuous casting mold; generally the lower end of the nozzle (s) is provided with one or two outlet orifices located in the axis of the nozzle or lateral, and opens out under the upper level of liquid steel present in the mold in question.
In addition, an injection of gas, such as for example argon, is often carried out at the inlet of the molten steel into the nozzle in order to avoid re-entry of air and oxidation of the bath, and also to prevent accidental clogging, for example by formation of alumina The use of conventional nozzles, that is to say of tubular shape, gives rise to a certain number of drawbacks among which the following two are not least
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- even in a steady state, due to the limited means for controlling the speed of supply of liquid steel available, we can see on the one hand, a significant variation in the level of steel in the ingot mold and on the other hand , an increase in the speed of flow of the steel under the meniscus formed in the mold in question;
this results in a certain number of disturbances such as the entrainment of the cover slag, the trapping of argon bubbles as well as inclusions in the ingot extracted, the whole resulting in a degradation of the quality of the ingot extracted continuously .
- The existence of a risk of blockage of the gas supply because the inlet of the latter is directly in contact with the liquid steel introduced into the nozzle.
On the basis of the preceding observations, continuous steel casting methods have been developed using a so-called hollow jet nozzle, that is to say a tubular nozzle provided with a distributor member disposed substantially at the inlet of the conduit forming the nozzle, said member having the purpose of deflecting the metal flowing in the nozzle towards the interior surface of the latter.
In operation, gas is also injected, such as argon, at the level of the entry of the steel into the nozzle and this in order to avoid clogging of said nozzle by deposits of alumina.
However, even when using hollow jet nozzles, there is in practice phenomena of instability in the flow of liquid steel in the nozzle, phenomena also having the effect of reducing the quality of the product cast in continued.
Presentation of the invention A study of the aforementioned phenomena has shown that the majority of the drawbacks mentioned above disappeared when, on the one hand, the flow of the steel in the nozzle was stabilized and, on the other hand, the optimization was optimized. the use of the outlet section of the nozzles of the nozzle so as to reduce the maximum speed of exit of the liquid steel into the ingot mold.
The continuous casting nozzle with rotating jet, object of the present invention, described in a vertical position and in the direction of flow of the liquid steel from top to bottom, mainly composed of a vertical duct comprising in its upper part a member
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
distributor arranged substantially at the inlet of said vertical conduit, said distributor member having the function of deflecting the metal entering the nozzle towards the interior surface of said vertical conduit, is essentially characterized in that it consists of a distributor element resulting from the assembly of a substantially circular duct, hereinafter called the inlet duct of the distributor member, with a central part,
said inlet conduit having the object of introducing steel into the assembly which follows and which forms the central part of the distributor member, in that the central part of the distributor member comprises at least three arms defining a star symmetrical about the central axis of the nozzle, in that an element called a dome is positioned after the aforementioned central part and defines with the above arms as many paths as there are arms, in that said paths are inclined on the horizontal in the direction of progression of the liquid steel, preferably this inclination is between 100 and 45, in that the dome is cut so as to delimit openings between itself and the inner wall of the conduit forming the nozzle,
the aforementioned openings being located in accordance with the aforementioned paths so as to allow the liquid steel to flow out of said paths through these openings, and in that the lower end of the nozzle comprises at least two lateral openings, called outlet openings, through which the liquid steel flows into the mold.
According to a first embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the ratio of the section of the inlet duct to the section of the nozzle, considered directly below the dome, is less than or equal to 0.5.
According to another embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, a path is delimited in the left part with respect to the direction of progression of the steel by a substantially vertical surface, preferably the surface in question delimiting the path is parallel to 100 near the longitudinal axis of the nozzle.
The objective sought is to obtain a substantially vertical surface for deflecting the stream of liquid steel and communicating to it a rotating descending movement. However, practical realization has its requirements, in particular during the production of parts by molding in foundry and sometimes imposes deviations from the vertical that are the so-called release angles, generally less than 10.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to a preferred embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the substantially vertical surface has, at the end of the path, a tangential connection with the interior surface of the vertical conduit of the nozzle.
According to another preferred embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the substantially vertical surface has, at the entrance of the path, a tangential connection with the interior surface of the steel inlet conduit.
According to yet another preferred embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the substantially vertical surface belongs to a straight cylinder with an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle and of elliptical section.
According to yet another embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, a path is delimited in the right part with respect to the direction of progression of the steel by a surface which is curved and oblique with respect to the substantially vertical surface delimiting the path in question on the left side; preferably, it is generated by a straight line perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle and moving on a propeller of the same axis as the nozzle and inclined at an angle between 200 and 450 on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle .
According to another embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the dome comprises a device for injecting a gas into the nozzle, preferably said device is located in the lower part of the dome.
This particular arrangement makes it possible to locate the gas inlet in a place where it is no longer subject to direct contact with the liquid steel and therefore clearly less likely to be obstructed.
According to yet another embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the dome comprises a surface which is arranged at the outlet of each path and towards the periphery of the nozzle, said surface having the object of promoting the rotational movement of the steel at the end of the road, preferably, said surface is oblique to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle and has a slope between 200 and 450 in the direction of travel of the steel.
According to another embodiment of the nozzle of the invention, the outlet openings are delimited by curved surfaces which are connected with the surface delimiting the interior of the duct forming the nozzle according to continuous curved surfaces on at least part of hearing; preferably the upper part of the hearing comprises a curved connection.
The use of a nozzle according to the invention has shown that this particular profiling of the arms of the distributor member has the effect of imposing on the steel introduced into the nozzle a rotational movement, the latter having for result of stabilizing the flow in the nozzle, and the constructive association in the same nozzle of said profiling of the arms with a shape of the gills as above had as a consequence a sharp reduction in the speed of exit of the steel out the nozzle;
the optimal use of the outlet surface of the gills allowing to keep a flow identical to that of known conventional nozzles but with a lower maximum outlet speed The figures below represent a preferred embodiment of the nozzle, object of the invention , and reference will be made to it below in order to specify the characteristics of the latter.
Figure 1 has two drawings, respectively ta is a perspective view of the distributor member and the dome, and 1b is a plan view of the distributor member drawn so as to show the path of the steel between the surfaces delimiting said paths.
Figure 2 illustrates the nozzle (1) when it is in service, that is to say fixed on the distributor basket (2) and opening at its lower end under the level of liquid steel (S) present in the continuous casting ingot mold It will be noted on the one hand that liquid steel has been represented in FIGS. 1 b and 2 by a continuous solid dark gray and on the other hand that in order not to overload the drawings unnecessarily in

indications, this steel was only indicated in one place on each of the figures mentioned above by the letter A.
According to a preferred embodiment of the nozzle (1) of the invention, shown respectively in Figures ta and 1b for the distributor member associated with the dome and in Figure 2 for the entire nozzle (1) attached on the basket (2), the inlet duct (3) introduces the steel (A) into a distributor member (4) which has 3 arms (5), each arm (5) has a substantially vertical surface (6) , located on the left with respect to the direction of progression of the steel (A), arranged in space so as to give the liquid steel (A) a helical rotating movement directing it towards the surface (7), located at straight relative to the direction of progression of the steel (A), belonging to the adjacent arm, preferably said surface (6) has an angle less than 10 relative to the vertical, a device (8)
gas injection is located so as to introduce it under the dome (9), the nozzle has two holes (10) which are connected on their upper part to the inner surface of the nozzle according to a continuous curved surface (11 ); preferably, the dome has a surface (12) which is arranged at the exit of each path, possibly said surface (12) is inclined along a slope between 200 and 450 in the direction of travel of the steel.
The use of the nozzle of the invention in the context of a continuous steel casting installation made it possible to note the following facts: a more stable flow inside the conduit forming the nozzle; - a lower exit speed from the steel than with a conventional nozzle for the same flow rate, - a reduction in variations in the level of the meniscus in the mold; - a much weaker entrainment both of pouring powder than of gas bubbles or inclusions; - a very small variation in the gas injection pressure;
- a beneficial effect of agglomeration of the inclusions by the centrifugal force exerted on them and by this, a faster decantation of the inclusions agglomerated in the mold due to the increase in their average diameter
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
All of the aforementioned elements go in the direction of an increase in the productivity of existing continuous casting installations and an improvement in the cleanliness of the ingots extracted.
