Abstract

A dense, temperature-resistant, material is prepared by impregnating a fibrous ceramic sheet with a solution containing an inorganic binder and 7% to 2%, by volume, of glycerine and then passing the sheet either through a heated forming die, or successively through a forming zone and a heating zone, to impress and set an extended surface in the sheet, e.g. corrugate it. The fibrous ceramic sheet comprises matted, randomly orientated, ceramic fibres. Apparatus is described in which ceramic paper sheet is wound from a roll and passed either through an impregnating bath of the binder and excess binder removing rolls, or is sprayed on both sides with the exact amount of binders. The impregnated sheet is then passed between corrugation rolls heated by gas burners.
