Abstract
Polyethylene film is heated to a deformable state below its melting-point and embossed by an embossing roller and simultaneously printed with a colouring material, the latter being deposited on to the valley surface of the film. As shown, polyethylene film from a supply roll 12 may be fed over carrier rolls 12 disposed below heating elements 38, e.g. electric lamps, coils or gas burners. The effect of heating elements 38 is to bring the polyethylene film into a deformable state before it passes <PICT:0860895/IV (a)/1> between resilient impression roller 20 and embossing die roller 23. A colouring material, e.g. printing-ink, may be supplied to the crest of roller 23 from tank 26 via matching roll 28, doctor blade 30, roller 32, and roller 35. The polyethylene film may subsequently be passed over cooling drum 40 before being collected on roll 43. The deformation of the polyethylene film by heating elements 38 may produce a somewhat oxidized surface giving the film a greater receptivity for, e.g. printing-ink.
