Abstract

800,080. Printing and embossing. BOSTON WOVEN HOSE & RUBBER CO. Jan. 1, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956], No. 15/57. Class 100(2) A method of forming a printed embossed surface on rubber comprises providing an embossing mould surface, applying ink to higher areas of the embossing mould surface, pressing the embossing mould surface into a vulcanizable rubber composition to mould an embossed surface thereon while simultaneously applying ink in the valleys thereof and simultaneously heating the vulcanizable rubber composition to effect vulcanization thereof. As shown, a web 20 of plastic material, such as rubber, is fed from a roll 28 between a heated embossing roller 10 and a steel band 12. The roller 10 may be a vulcanizing drum such as that described in Specification 473,899 [Group V]. The band 12 is supported by rollers 23, 24 and a tensioning roller 26. The roller 10 has an embossed surface which engages a resilient inking roller 16 rotating in contact with a duct roller 17 dipping in a trough 18. The relief areas of the surface are thereby inked, such that the ink is transferred to the embossed portions of the web. The rollers 16, 17, Fig. 2, are supported by bearings 16.1,17.1 respectively which are adjustably mounted by screwed spindles 16.2, 17.2 respectively in a bracket 19. The pressure between the roller 16 and roller 10 may be varied by operation of a hand wheel 16.3, thereby varying the depth to which ink is applied to the surface. The amount of ink applied to the surface may be varied by adjusting the pressure between the rollers 16 and 17 by means of a handwheel 17.3. The height of the trough 18 may be varied by operating a handwheel 18.3 on a screwed spindle 18.2.
