Abstract

554,252. Vulcanizing material in long lengths. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1942, No. 570. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1941. [Class 70] In vulcanizing rubber sheet material in long lengths such as belting, flooring, corrugated matting, printers' blanket &c. the material is partially vulcanized by the application of heat and pressure and vulcanization is completed by heat alone. The material, unwound from a roll 10, passes first over a platen press 12, in which it is held stationary during pressure between the heated platens 14, then through a festooning device in a heat-insulated chamber 23, and then through a heated chamber or oven 30 and is rewound on a roller 40. By means of the festooning device the material can be fed continuously through the oven 30 although it is held stationary at intermittent intervals in the platen press. In a modification, the preliminary partial vulcanization is given while the material is passing over a rotating heated drum against which it is pressed by a travelling belt.
