A method of manufacturing belting comprising one or more plies of textile fabric coated with a non-inflammable thermoplastic composition comprises passing the coated ply or plies through hot air to fuse the composition and then cooling the coated ply or plies while subjected to pressure between the peripheral surface of a rotating drum and an endless tensioned steel band following the contour of the drum. A single ply A of belting fabric is coated on both sides with polyvinyl chloride and then passed through a tunnel over rolls 3, heated air emerging from nozzles 2 in ducts 9. The heated air is returned to a heater and recirculated. The edges of the belting ply, are shaped square by passing between spring-loaded U-profiled rollers 10, or alternatively the rollers are encircled by an endless steel band, or the belting ply may have U-shaped, edging strips. The belting ply then engages an endless steel band 4 and passes round a cooled drum 5 being compressed between the band and drum. The band passes round drums 6 and 7 and a tensioning device 8. A belting comprising several plies is made similarly but it travels more slowly.' The roller 3 may be covered with a heat-resistant inert material such as polytetrafluorethylene, or may contact rollers rotating in a lubricant such as a silicone fluid.
