Abstract
958,214. Discharge apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 25, 1960 [July 29, 1959; Nov. 20, 1959], Nos. 25966/59 and 39384/59. Heading H1D. A high-voltage generator comprises an insulating envelope 1, Fig. 1, a corona discharge point electrode 3, a field-forming extended, e.g. hemispherical, electrode 5 and an ion collector 6, 7 ; an ionizable gas is blown up the envelope 1, e.g. at 10<SP>4</SP> cm./sec., ions are injected into it by corona discharge at 3 and these ions are collected against the voltage gradient, e.g. 10 kv./cm., of 6, before they have had time to disperse to the envelope. Supporting-spider 2 acts also as a screen for the collector. The collector consists of a collecting grid 6 followed by a backing grid 7 at a potential which drives ions back to the grid 6; they may be in the form of interleaved plates parallel to the gas flow. By connecting electrode 6 to electrode 3a of a further identical set of electrodes, cascade operation can be achieved. An eight-stage device has a return gas passage 18, 19, boundary air being drawn off at 21 and fresh high-speed air being injected at 25, the overall pressure being 70 lbs./in.<SP>2</SP> A built-in power pack 29 energizes the last backing electrode.
