Abstract
1,108,997. Discharge apparatus. KAMAN AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. 11 Aug., 1965 [16 Oct., 1964], No. 34292/65. Heading H1D. A gas ionizer for ionizing a gas without the use of a magnetic field comprises a metal electrode 18 surrounding an eccentrically-positioned metal rod electrode 12, and means, e.g. a grid 20, for urging electrons towards the centre of electrode 18, the electrode dimensions and spacing, the applied potentials, and the gas pressure being such that electrons are radially trapped and describe a large number of ionizing orbits without reaching either of the electrodes. A mathematical analysis of the necessary operating conditions is provided. The ionizer may be used as an ion source in accelerators, propulsion devices, vacuum pumps, vacuum gauges, or neutron generators. The cylindrical electrode 18 in the neutron generator shown is connected as a cathode and is closed by a mesh screen 20. A target electrode 22 completes a sealed envelope 24 which is first evacuated and then backfilled with gas from a source 28 at an extremely low pressure, i.e. too low to support a Townsend discharge. Dueterium or tritium may be used as the gas and as a loading in the target 22. The cathode 18 may alternatively take the form of a truncated pyramid or a truncated cone (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). A zig-zag anode wire may extend from side to side of a cylindrical cathode (Fig. 10, not shown).
