Abstract

958,100. Spray-producers. CHISELHURST Inc. Sept. 14, 1955. No. 26324/55. Heading B2F. An aerosol generator comprises a gas conduit member having an inlet and a constricted outlet, a barrier member axially spaced in part of the outlet, and a feed conduit for feeding a flowable substance to the fringe of a gas stream which can be caused to issue from the outlet and impinge on the barrier member at high speed whereby the gas stream is drastically distorted and breaks down the flowable substance. In Fig. 1 the gas conduit 1 is surrounded by a feed conduit 4 provided with a discharge opening of which the inner diameter is preferably from 1.3 to 50 times the diameter of the gas jet 3. A barrier member 7 in the form a truncated cone is axially spaced from the jet by a distance of between one-tenth and twenty times the diameter of the jet and is supported in position by a bridge 9. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the feed conduit 4a surrounds the barrier member 7 instead of the gas conduit. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3, the gas conduit 14 is provided with a feed means 15 leading through the walls of the conduit. A threaded member 17 in the conduit provides a spiral passage between its threads and the wall of the conduit so that gas travels spirally towards the jet; at the same time fluid entering through the pipe 15 is maintained against the inner wall of the gas conduit so that the fluid will issue from the jet in the form of a sleeve round the jet stream core.
