Abstract

Trifluoromethylmercapto-phenol of the general formula: <FORM:0957987/C2/1> wherein X stands for a hydrogen atom or a substituent such as a bromine or chlorine atom or a hydroxyl or C1-4 alkyl radical are prepared by reacting an appropriate phenol with trifluoromethylsulphenyl chloride at a temperature of 0-200 DEG C., preferably in the presence of an inert solvent and of a Friedel-Crafts' catalyst. Examples are given. The trifluoromethylsulphenyl chloride used as starting material may be prepared by reacting perchloromethyl mercaptan and sodium fluoride in tetramethylene sulphone, bis-trifluoromethyl disulphide being obtained as a by-product.
