Abstract

The invention comprises lower alkyl halopyrosulphates of the general formula X-SO2-O-SO2-OR11 wherein R11 is a lower alkyl group containing 1-6 carbon atoms and X is a halogen atom e.g. chlorine or bromine and a process for the production of symmetrical aromatic sulphones of the general formula R-SO2-R where R is an aryl group which may be substituted, characterized in that a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon is reacted with a lower alkyl halopyrosulphate as defined above and the resulting sulphone is isolated by precipitation with water. The lower alkyl halopyrosulphates are produced by the reaction of a lower alkyl halide with sulphur trioxide. Methyl chloropyrosulphate is obtained by reacting methyl chloride with sulphur trioxide and 4,41-dimethyl-diphenyl sulphone, p,p1-dichlorodiphenyl sulphone and p,p1-dimethoxy-diphenyl sulphone are obtained by reacting methyl chloropyrosulphate with toluene, chlorbenzene and anisole respectively.
