Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula XCH2CH2CHR1(CH2)4COOH and esters thereof, where X is a halogen (e.g. Cl, Br or I) and R1 is an acylthio radical; and their production by reacting a compound as above in which R1 is an organic sulphonyloxy radical, with an monothiocarboxylic acid and an alkali, or with a metal salt of a monothiocarboxylic acid, in the presence or absence of a solvent. Specified thiocarboxylic acids are thioformic, thioacetic, thiopropionic, thiobenzoic and phenyl thioacetic acids; specified alkalies are alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkyl or aryl amines, and pyridine. The starting materials may be prepared by reacting a 6-hydroxy-8-halooctanoic acid or its derivatives with an organic sulphonyl halide, e.g. a methane, ethane, benzene or toluene sulphonyl halide.
