Abstract

The invention comprises disulphonyl chlorides of the formula <FORM:0826922/IV (b)/1> in which R is a halogen atom such as chlorine, bromine or fluorine, a C1-5 alkoxy group or a nitro group and R1 is hydrogen, C1-5 alkyl, or a C1-6 carboxylic acyl group such as C1-6 alkanoyl, or a phenylacetyl group, and their preparation by chlorosulphonating the corresponding substituted aniline in the presence of an alkali-metal halide such as sodium chloride. The reaction is suitably carried out by adding the aniline derivative to chlorosulphonic acid dropwise, subsequently adding the alkali-metal halide in small portions and heating to 100-200 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of 5-chloro-, 6-chloro-, 5-bromo-, 5-methoxy- and 5-fluoroaniline-2 : 4-disulphonyl chloride and N - methyl - 5 - chloroaniline - 2 : 4 - disulphonyl chloride, by disulphochlorination of the corresponding substituted aniline and N-phenylacetyl-5-fluoroaniline-2 : 4-disulphonyl chloride by the action of phenylacetyl chloride on 5-fluoroaniline-2 : 4-disulphonyl chloride.
