Abstract

The invention comprises o -halogenated a -acetylenic ketones of the general formula <FORM:1008453/C2/1> in which R and R1 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, X is a halogen atom, n is an integer of at least 3, m is an integer lower than 2n. The compounds are produced by adding a concentrated aqueous alkali metal hypohalite solution gradually to a solution of the compound <FORM:1008453/C2/2> in an organic solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions and in the presence of a water-absorbing agent which is also inert, while continuously bubbling carbon dioxide through the mixture without the application of external heat, the amount of carbon dioxide employed being at least twice the molar equivalent of the alkali metal hypohalite. The reaction temperature is preferably kept at between 0 DEG and 25 DEG C. The solvent may be a chlorinated lower aliphatic hydrocarbon and the water absorbing agent anhydrous sodium or magnesium sulphate.
