Abstract

Halogenated ketones of formula RCO(CH2)nCH2X where R is alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl containing up to 10 carbon atoms, X is chlorine or bromine and n is 3 to 10 are prepared by reacting a hydroperoxide of formula <FORM:0934398/IV(a)/1> with a hydrohalic acid or a halide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cuprous or a ferrous compound or iron powder and in the absence of an oxidising agent. Temperatures of -20 to +50 DEG C. are specified. The reaction may be carried out in a single phase using a suitable solvent or in two phases, one comprising an aqueous solution of the catalyst and the hydrohalic acid or metal halide and the other comprising the peroxide or an organic solvent solution thereof. Examples describe the preparation of 7-chloro- and 7-bromo-heptanone-(2) from 1-methyl-cyclohexylhydroperoxide and of 6 6-chloro- and 6-bromo-hexanone-(2)- from 1-methylcyclopentylhydro-peroxide.
